"Dear Sir/Madam
Like many regular users of the Shepherds Bush Market, I am deeply concerned about the current state of the Market and plans for its future.
We understand that Transport for London (Tfl) obtains over £1 million pounds a year in rent from the traders in the Market however very little money is spent on maintaining or promoting the Market. The new White City Development will also be likely to pose a serious threat to the viability of the market.
According to reports in the Ealing Gazette (Oct 25 2007), the market is fairly low on the list of priorities of Tfl. In the meantime it poses as public health hazard, lacks public toilets and is known to suffer rat infestation, water pooling in food stores and dangerous kerbs. It is clearly badly in need of reinvestment and the stall holders certainly deserve better amenities.
I have recently written to Transport for London demanding to know what plans they have for improving the Market, for protecting the livelihoods of traders and promoting the Market to ensure its long-term survival. I would urge other local residents and supporters of the Market also to do the same.
