Merlene thanks supporters following GLA elections

May 5, 2008 12:00 AM

Merlene speaking at the Liberal ClubMerlene Emerson, Candidate for West Central thanks local residents for their support in the recent elections on May 1st. She will continue with many of her current campaigns as PPC for Hammersmith.

"A big 'Thank you' to everyone who supported me in the recent London Assembly elections. Many of you had expressed regret that you did not live in West Central and could not vote directly for me but 15, 934 of you did and I am very grateful to you!" says Merlene.

Predictably, the Mayoral race overshadowed the London Assembly elections. Despite the excellent efforts of Lib Dem Mayoral Candidate, Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrats were badly squeezed in the London elections as the public were carried away by the perceived 2-horse race.

Commenting Merlene declared:

"It has been a real honour and a pleasure standing in the London elections. I would have loved to have represented the people in West Central and brought more diversity to the London Assembly but sadly it was not to be.

"Fortunately, I can still continue with many of the campaigns that I have been involved in as PPC (Prospective Parliamentary Candidate) for Hammersmith.

"I know that the Lib Dem teams in Kensington & Chelsea and in Westminster will also continue to serve and fight for the interests of local people as they have done now for many years."

On the same day (May 1st) voters across England and Wales went to the polls in local elections. The Liberal Democrats finished ahead of Labour with 25% of the votes and gained many new Councillors including control in Sheffield, Hull and Burnley in the North and St Albans in the South.
