Merlene writes in the Chronicle:
"I am surprised by the zeal both Labour and Tory politicians are devoting to opposing the closure of a dozen Post Offices in West Central (comprising boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham and Westminster) given the fact that nationally both those parties have encouraged the closures.
Residents are rightly furious that local post offices are soon to be closed. But the cause for these closures is Labour's continuation of Tory policy that forces government services to operate commercially and to turn a profit.
The inevitable result is post office closures, 3,500 under the Tories and many more than that under Labour.
Money will be saved and taxes won't be needed to subsidise the Post Office. But the aged, mobility impaired or socially excluded will simply be left behind.
Opposition to the Post Office closures in Parliament has been led by the Liberal Democrats. When Labour announced the last wave of cuts last December, the Tories had no solutions at all.
While they gave us warm words on the need to support Post Offices, there was no explanation as to how the Conservatives would keep branches open."
