"May I congratulate Monica Derevjanik for her article entitled "Council tax cut is 'hoodwinking' claim opponents" (4 Dec 2008).
These so-called tax cuts have only been made possible as a result of the last Council budget proposals to cut care services for elderly, sick and disabled by £2.8m, environment and highways maintenance by £1.6m and library services by £200,000 (to but name a few).
At the same time parking charges have increased by 12.5%, children's out of hours play charges by 121% and meals on wheels prices have hit the elderly by a 40% increase.
We have also heard of the latest casualty, green waste collection service which will likely be made more expensive to householders who already indirectly pay for the service based on the council tax banding of their properties.
Whilst we all like the sound of tax cuts (so much so that the Tory Council has been announcing this at every opportunity) we find that stealth taxes are being introduced at the same time in order to balance the books. Afterall, someone has to pay for these cuts, and, in the Tory council's view, why not the most vulnerable, the elderly, our children or the environmentally minded?"
