Nick Clegg MP and Merlene Emerson wishes everyone a Happy New Year
While the credit crunch and recession will make 2009 difficult for many, the difficulties we face present an opportunity to develop a sustainable economy that will make a difference for years to come.
Instead of a token cut in VAT that most people will not notice, the Liberal Democrats propose building a green, sustainable infrastructure that Britain desperately needs.
Liberal Democrats' "Green Road to Recovery" would include a five year programme to insulate every school and hospital, fund insulation and energy efficiency for a million homes, build 40,000 extra zero-carbon homes, buy 700 new trains and electrify the Great Western and Midland mainlines. All of these would cost the same as the £12.5 billion cost of the cut in VAT. However, these projects will put many more people to work and leave a legacy that will save energy and fight climate change.
Labour and the Tories have proposed tax cuts which they think will be popular rather than have any long term stimulus for the UK economy. The Liberal Democrats are working for a new economy in 2009 that meets the needs of people now as well as securing our environment for the future.
