Black and ethnic minority Parliamentary candidates from across all parties were invited to a reception at the House of Commons on 24 March organised by Operation Black Vote (OBV). The event was held to showcase the so-called 'Barack Obama Generation' of Prospective Parliamentary candidates.
OBV's Simon Woolley said: "This new generation of BME politicians brings a confidence, dynamism and a humanity which is very much in the Obama spirit. Their generation are confident enough to talk about race, but unwilling to be defined by it. Their success will be the UK's success."
Lib Dem candidates were well represented at the event and Nick Clegg MP, leader of the Party was one of the key note speakers at the event. Nick said that there are currently over 20 Lib Dem PPCs who have been selected from black and minority ethnic background, representing some 9% of Lib Dem PPCs. It is very much the aim of the Party to redress the lack of BME representation in Westminster.
"I am delighted to work with organisations such as OBV which has been encouraging increasing number of ethnic minority Britons to stand up and be counted" said Merlene. "The barriers to entry into Politics still exist but armed with idealism and integrity, I will strive to overcome these barriers. Hopefully the public will see that the old ways of doing things are not the best ways and will vote for a better future" said Merlene.
