Conservative Flip Flop on 3rd Runway

Merlene Emerson, Liberal Democrat Candidate in Hammersmith has highlighted Tory confusion on Heathrow expansion. The local Gazette published her letter on 14 August:
"Residents should not be surprised to read in the Gazette that Conservatives are confused by Conservative policy towards a third runway at Heathrow Airport ("Tory Stance unchanged", Letters 7 Aug, Hammersmith & Shepherds Bush Gazette).
"A few years ago, the Tories were avid supporters of expansion. Then their policy changed to supporting a third runway at Heathrow only if it was justified by the economic benefits it would bring. Now they are against expansion. The only thing that has changed to justify their shifting position on Heathrow is the approach of a General Election for which the Tories are desperate to win, no matter which policies they must change. So it is understandable that a Conservative MP would say their policy "might have to be revisited" and then see a Tory Parliamentary Candidate slap him down in a letter to our local papers.
"Since the Liberal Democrats have consistently opposed a third runway at Heathrow, and consistently proposed alternatives, I am confident that I will never have to write such a letter to "correct" our MPs."
