On the evening of 7 April the West London branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign held hustings for the Parliamentary candidates for Hammersmith at the King Street Rivercourt Methodist Church, ably chaired by Mr Salim Alam (third from left in picture).
This is a complex and sensitive issue and one that cannot be ignored by serious politicians around the world, with the exception perhaps of the Tory candidate who had boycotted the event (but we did say serious).
Armed with advice from the Liberal Democrat Friends of Palestine as well as the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel before the event, Merlene was able to convey with authority the party policy on the subject. The Lib Dem policy on Gaza was laid down as far back as 8 March 2009 in the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead and included the calling of an arms embargo on Israel by Britain and the EU.
Merlene also shared about her personal experience as a mediator since 2000 and urged the UK and international community to help mediate a two state solution that would bring peace to the region.
