Hammersmith & Fulham activists met at Chair-elect, Paul Kennedy's home in Fulham for a morning of action. Armed with surveys on Fairer Votes, they 'knocked' on and 'dropped' off survey forms in neighbouring streets to gather information on how well informed residents were about the current (First Past the Post) and proposed (Alternative Vote) voting systems.
Merlene joined in for part of the morning surveying a couple of streets, careful to avoid knocking on the Leader of Council's home. "I don't think I needed to survey Cllr Greenhalgh on this question as I can guess what his views on electoral reform would be. Should there have been AV in local elections, the composition for Hammersmith & Fulham Council would be very different indeed!" said Merlene.
AV would require MPs to be elected on at least 50% of the votes cast and give voters a choice of preferences without having to resort to tactical voting.
