At a gathering for the Young Ice-breakers of the 48 Group Club, chaired by Stephen Perry and hosted by Clifford Chance, guests were treated to a key-note speech with Q&A with ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair, drawing on his experiences as Middle East peace envoy and adviser to many African governments.
Merlene who was made an honorary member of the 48 Group Club over a year ago said: "I agreed with most of the views expressed regarding the dual nature of China, both as a developing country as well as a future super power. Strategically, it is vital for us in Britain to seek closer co-operation with China, not only in the promotion of trade and commerce. but also in the sharing of responsibilities over the environment and in the future security of energy and world resources" said Merlene.
"As expected in a talk of this nature, the speaker would focus on UK and China as two very separate worlds and entities. Whereas many of us British Chinese feel that we can easily bridge both cultures and foster deeper understanding between the two countries."
Britain is currently China's largest European investor and China is the second largest investor in London after the US. The Mayor Boris Johnson has 2 representative offices in China in Beijing and Shanghai.
