THE future of Marylebone Farmers' Market is under threat after Westminster Council announced plans to "dispose" of Moxon Street car park which holds the weekly market. Restrictions on when the council can sell the site without being penalised run out next year and the council may simply sell the site to the highest bidder for a high density development.
Merlene and Westminster Liberal Democrats are fighting to save the market and demanding that the 40 stall holders must be offered an alternative site should the site be redeveloped. Merlene said:
"It is clear that our campaign resonates with the local community and that the Farmers Market adds to the flavour and ambience of this area. Not all Council decisions have to be based on the bottom line. After all, there is even recognition by the Coalition Government that we should consider the happiness and well being of citizens in any policy decision."
