Admission to the Freedom of the City

Merlene is a member and liveryman with the Worshipful Company of World Traders. She has a legal background, with a Bachelor of Laws from Kings College and a Master of Laws from Clare Hall, University of Cambridge.

Following graduation Merlene trained and qualified as Solicitor in the City of London with the firm, Norton Rose, working as a banking lawyer in the Corporate and Financial Department. She subsequently requalified as a Solicitor and Advocate in Singapore and was Partner of a Singapore law firm, working on cross border finance and international joint ventures.

On her return to the UK, Merlene retrained as a commercial Mediator and is an accredited Mediator with C.E.D.R. and a Restorative Justice practitioner. She has served on the management committee of CALM Mediation that provides pro bono community mediation.

This has led to her greater involvement in politics and philanthropy. Merlene was appointed to the board of social landlord Richmond Housing Partnership (2006 - 2012), and is currently Director of Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association and Chair of Lien Viet Housing Association (since 2014). She co-founded Chinese Welfare Trust in 2008, a national charity that looks after the interests of elderly Chinese community in the UK and is a Trustee of Sir Heinz Koeppler Trust, which administers the trust and wishes of the founder of Wilton Park. She stood as a candidate in the Greater London Assembly elections in 2012 and 2016 is currently Chair of a Race Equality Policy Working Group. She has also worked at the House of Lords as aide to Baroness Meral Hussein Ece (2011-2016) and Baroness Susan Kramer (2016-2018).

Merlene was awarded an MBE for political and public service in the Queen's 90th Birthday Honours in 2016.

Member of British Wheel of Yoga (Teaching diploma) since 2000. Merlene has returned from a 16 day trip to Nepal and Tibet in early September, including 3-day trek around Mt Kailash, up to an altitude of 5900m.
